Monument to the unknown Wehrmacht deserter
Since 1935, a military or court martial was located in the commandant's house. During the Second World War, this court sentenced up to 60 deserters to death. The detention cells were located in the basement of the Defensionskaserne. Many of the executions were carried out on the Petersberg. Since 1995, the memorial has commemorated those soldiers who no longer wished to serve the criminal regime. The memorial was created by the Erfurt artist Thomas Nicolai.
