Panoramic views from the citadel

Because of its elevated position and star-shaped layout, the citadel offers a number of wonderful vantage points. The angled bastions of the fortifications offer some of the best vistas.

From Bastion Johann and Bastion Franz, far-reaching views of the city open up to the north and east. Below Ravelin Peter, you can see the panorama trail winding its way down the hill, with views of cathedral square, Erfurt Cathedral and the Church of St Severus, as well as the buildings opposite and Marktstrasse, the ‘gateway to the old quarter’.

From Bastion Kilian and Bastion Martin, you can look to the south and to the egapark on one side. Steigerwald forest is visible on the horizon beyond the residential districts of Brühl and Löbervorstadt. And there is no better place to watch the sunset than from Bastion Michael, located on the western side of the citadel.
