Lower barracks (Stasi archives regional office)

The building, also known as Barracks III, was erected at the beginning of the 18th century, two-storey with a high gable roof. Shortly afterwards, the builders raised it by a third storey with a flat gable roof and bomb-proof beam ceilings. Apart from a brief residential phase, the military used the barracks until 1945, when children attended school here, only to hand the building back to the police and combat troops. Since 1993 it has been the office and archive building of the "Stasi Records Authority". About 4,500 linear metres of files are stored in the archive.
