Guided tour of the special exhibition "Garden of Paradise - Garden Paradises"
The former monastery church of St Peter and St Paul is one of the most important Romanesque church buildings in Thuringia, despite considerable damage to its substance in the 19th century. As the spiritual centre of St. Peter's Monastery, which occupied a prominent position among the Thuringian monasteries, it shaped the skyline of the city of Erfurt for centuries.
The monastery suffered serious destruction during the Napoleonic Wars. As a result, the monastery church was dismantled and used as a storehouse for provisions. St Peter's Church was partially renovated for the Federal Garden Exhibition in 2021 and is now once again an important focal point on the Petersberg.
The special exhibition "Garden of Paradise - Garden Paradises" shows the imaginative ideas of paradise, which are reflected in the design of gardens as paradises on earth. Starting with the gardens of the defunct St Peter's Monastery, the exhibition sheds light on medieval garden culture and presents the development of courtly garden design in Thuringia.
